Franchises must buy more local players

The much-anticipated IPL auction of this year is just a handful of days away from the real world now. It will be that time of the year when the soi-disant demigods of the game will be up for sale. The celebrated names on the cricket field will be hawked across the eight franchises and depending upon their needs, demands and budget, these franchises will build a team by luxuriating in some money-spinning deals.
The reason why this year's auction is a hot topic is because it is going to be a mega auction which will see a significant revamp in the structure of almost all teams. The two-day auction is likely to be a witness to numerous startling decisions.
The Indian Premier League is at a level now where a lot of things have to be kept in mind before taking a decision for there are other facets involved which are far away from the competition between the bat and the ball. A commercialised event, as it has been for some years, a lot of pondering goes behind the development of the brand value (of IPL, as a whole, and all other franchises as well).
One ploy which could hand these franchises more footfall is them investing in local players. Strictly not for the sake of it, but, for the overall amelioration of their brand. For franchises such as Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils, who have been deprived of home support in the recent years, such a tactic is likely to end their deprivation.
Let us start with KXIP. Citing the above logic in mind, two eminent names which come to a human mind are Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh. The duo has it in it to attract a lot of eyeballs to the stadiums, especially in Mohali. KXIP had Gurkeerat Singh Mann warming their bench for the most part of the last six years. An all-round prospect as good as him should both be acquired in the auction and included in the playing eleven in this season.

Gambhir is likely to allure big bucks this weekend.
Two Delhi boys in Gautam Gambhir (498) and Shikhar Dhawan (479) were the second and third-highest run-scorers in IPL 2017. Another Delhi lad in Nitish Rana gave splendid performances last year. The fact that Delhi-locals brought laurels for other franchises must have been a learning curve for Delhi Daredevils. Cashing in on these names will give them enough benefits both on and off the field.
Moreover, players like Harbhajan, Yuvraj, Gambhir and Dhawan provide you with the much-needed option of leading the side as well. Something which both KXIP and DD are looking for.
Apart from playing with its previous core group of players, perhaps, this is the reason why MS Dhoni insisted on buying Ravichandran Ashwin in the auction. Chennai Super Kings should also look at local boys in Murali Vijay, Dinesh Karthik, Vijay Shankar, Yo Mahesh and others.
On similar grounds, Royal Challengers Bangalore must go for the likes of Lokesh Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Stuart Binny, R Vinay Kumar, Abhimanyu Mithun, K Gowtham, Shreyas Gopal and others. Buying all these names might not be practically true, but, trying to get as many as possible is likely to help their cause.
It is true that planning for an IPL auction can be easier said than done for the permutation and combinations that come into play can be beyond one's thinking. One thing which is likely to hamper many strategies on the given day is the 'Right to Match' card. Franchises should also make the optimum use of this option.
