Preview - IPL 10 - Delhi Daredevils.

Delhi Daredevils made it to the Semi-finals in the first two seasons of the Indian Premier League. But since then, their expedition has faced a lot of ups and downs. They did not make it to the qualifying round in 2010 due to a low Net Run Rate. They went through a sudden sink in 2011 when they finished at the bottom of the points table.
In 2012, they topped the points table but failed to get past Chennai Super Kings in the play-offs. 2011 struck them again in 2013 and 2014 as they finished at the bottom of the points table. They have improved by a position each in 2015 and 2016.
Delhi Daredevils bought as many as nine players in the auction which was held earlier this year. 17 Indian and nine overseas players have summed up the number of players to 26. In the name of remaining budget, the franchise has INR 9.05 crore in its purse.

Buys/TransfersSouth Africa's fast bowling sensation, Kagiso Rabada (INR 5 crore), was Daredevils' highly priced buy this year. They have also taken po…

Preview - IPL 10 - Gujarat Lions.

One of the latest recruits in the Indian Premier League, Gujarat Lions are all set to go in for their second appearance in the tournament. Under the captaincy of Suresh Raina, the team topped the points table in the last season. However, they failed to get past the Royal Challengers Bangalore and SunRisers Hyderabad in the play-offs.
Raina was also their highest run-scorer, scoring 399 runs in 15 matches. Dhawal Kulkarni led the bowling charts for Lions as he picked 18 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 20.22. Aaron Finch, Brendon McCullum, Dinesh Karthik, Dwayne Smith and Dwayne Bravo emerged as the main troupers.

Gujarat Lions bought as many as 11 players in this year's auction. Their tally of players have reached to the saturation point of 27 (19 Indian + 8 Overseas). Productive buyers, as they are, they still have INR 10.5 crores remaining in their purse.
Buys/TransfersEngland's hard-hitting opening batsman, Jason Roy (INR 1 crore), was their most expensive and lone overs…

Preview - IPL 10 - Sun Risers Hyderabad.

Sun Risers Hyderabad came into existence in 2013 as a replacement for the defunct Deccan Chargers. The franchise made a positive start by qualifying for the play-offs in its maiden season. Having said that, they slipped to the sixth position in the points table in 2014. Remained at the same position in the subsequent year. It was in the last season, when Sun Risers registered their maiden IPL title. Much of the credit belonged to the captain, David Warner, for he amassed 848 runs in 17 matches at an average of 60.57 and a strike rate of 151.42.
During the auction this year, Sun Risers acquired the services of eight new players. The auction for them can be deduced as bold and innovative. A squad of 25 consists of 16 Indian and nine overseasplayers. Notwithstanding the names, they still have INR 12.25 crores of remaining budget.

Buys/TransfersAfghanistan's wunderkind, Rashid Khan, was their extravagance buy for this season. In what will be his first stint in the IPL, the 18-year old, …

Preview - IPL 10 - Royal Challengers Bangalore.

If not the most successful team, Royal Challengers Bangalore has certainly been the most entertaining team in the Indian Premier League. They had a bland inaugural season in 2008 where they finished at the seventh position. But it was just a matter of time when they finished as the finalists in the subsequent year. 2010 saw them taking an exit from the IPL as the Semi-finalists. They topped the points table in 2011 but failed to get past Chennai Super Kings in the final match.
They failed to qualify for the play-offs in 2012 and 2013 by just one position. Dropped to the seventh position in 2014. Played the play-offs in 2015 and emerged as the finalists yet again in 2016.
They bought only five players in this year's auction, one of them being one of the most expensive buys of this year, limiting their remaining budget to INR 2.425 crores. A squad of 24 comprises of 15 Indian and nine overseas players.
Buys/TransfersThe most eye-catching deal for RCB was acquiring the services of Engla…

Preview - IPL 10 - Mumbai Indians.

Be it in terms of the game or in terms of fan following, Mumbai Indians is one of the most talked about teams in the Indian Premier League. They did not achieve the desired results at the start of the journey but have raised the bar since then. The franchise finished at the fifth position in the first season. Fell down further to seventh in the next season.
They turned the tables in 2010 as they topped the points table. Finished third in 2011 and 2012. Emerged as Champions in 2013. Finished at the fourth position in 2014. Came out as Champions yet again in 2015. But failed to reach the play-offs by just one position in the last season.
Mumbai Indians spent lavishly during the auction. The franchise was left with 3.355 crores after the bidding process was culminated. As many as seven players were drafted into the squad.
Buys/TransfersThey spent the most on capped Indian leg-spinner, Karn Sharma (INR 3.2 crores). In what will be his first stint in the IPL, Karnataka's K Gowtham (INR 2 …

Preview - IPL 10 - Kings XI Punjab.

The team from the Northern most part of India has been strong on names but weak on result off late. Kings XI Punjab reached the Semi-finals in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League in 2008. But what followed next wasn't up to the mark for them. They finished at the fifth position in 2009. The ranking further fell down to the last position in 2010. In the subsequent year, they finished at No. 5. The ranking degraded to one position lower in 2012. It remained the same in 2013.
They reached the final in 2014. But since then, they have been finishing at the bottom of the points table for two years now. Ahead of this season, the captain has been changed. The coach has been changed. It is a matter of time and for all we know, the results might also change.
If there was any franchise who spent judiciously during the auction, it was Kings XI Punjab. Talking about the remaining budget, they still have INR 13.9 crores (highest for any team) in their purse. Notwithstanding the budg…

Ace up India's sleeve.

From 22/01/2017 to 25/03/2017, from Mumbai to Dharamsala, from the Arabian Sea to the Himalayas, from the Irani Trophy to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, from 5-0-23-0 to 23-3-68-4, life has changed in 61 days for Kuldeep Yadav.
During the third day of the Irani Trophy 2017, Rest of India had bowled 79 overs. Out of which, Kuldeep Yadav had only bowled five overs. The other spinner on the ground, Shahbaz Nadeem had bowled 29 overs by stumps. Not that Yadav was injured or something. He was present on the field throughout the day. It was just that he wasn't given the ball for more than FIVE overs. But the ball game had changed at a distance span of 1,900-odd km and time span of two months.
His stellar performance in the Ranji Trophy (35 wickets in eight matches) in integration with the variety that he offers earned him a national call-up. Whether he will make his test debut in this season still remained under dubiety.
He was never the idle replacement for Virat Kohli but India's ploy o…

Preview - India Blue vs India Red - Deodhar Trophy.

214 days. 30 weeks. Seven Months.
Seems a lot of time but not for people associated with cricket in India. Such is the average length of a domestic season (excluding the IPL) in this country. It started with the pink ball in Greater Noida and will culminate with the white ball in Visakhapatnam. Deodhar Trophy is all set to kick-off tomorrow with India Blue taking on India Red in the opening match. Winner of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Tamil Nadu, will take part as the third team in the tourney. Both the teams have had their share of injuries before the match. India Blue has lost its captain in Rohit Sharma due to a minor knee injury. India Red has lost star batsman, Kedar Jadhav, due to a stomach problem. Veteran off-spinner, Harbhajan Singh will lead India Blue in Rohit's absence. Shreyas Iyer's flight to Dharamsala (as a cover for Virat Kohli ahead of the ultimate test) has created another void in the Blue squad. Both the teams look equitable on paper which further increases the va…

Preview - India vs Australia - Fourth Test.

'Cricket nahin khedna, six lagaa ho,
Jaana jaana meri ammiye, Rohru jaana ho.'
This verse from the evergreen Himachali song 'Rohru Jaana Meri Ammiye' conveys a message of a child to his mother that he is no longer interested in playing cricket. For all we know, there can be a set of combined reasons behind the child's vow. The fact that he has been hit for a six (six lagaa ho) in combination with the fact that it must have not been easy for the fielder to bring the ball from down the hill. 'Rohru' is a town which is 115 km away from Shimla and some 340-odd km away from Dharamsala. Cricket might not have reached in Rohru, like it has reached in other parts of Himachal Pradesh but it has certainly reached in the winter capital of the state, Dharamsala.
International cricket made it's debut in HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala four years ago but it is this moment which will be remembered forever. Be it a debut as a player or as a ground, a test debut is cherished the m…

Review - India vs Australia - Day 4.

With all that had happened on the first three days of the second test between India and Australia, test cricket was more than just prepared to witness another scintillating climax to a test match. Low scores. Turning track. Booming Bengaluru crowd. Home team 1-0 down. Things appeared to be in place for a nail-biter. Such is the grandeur of this format in the world of cricket.
All eyes were glued on the dependable duo of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane. Both of them started cautiously for the track did not allowed them to dictate terms at the inception. For the first seven overs with the old ball, Australia did not cause any harm. As a result of which, Steve Smith took the new ball and introduced his lethal weapon in Mitchell Starc into the attack for the first time in the day. On the second ball that Starc bowled, Rahane drove him on the up to complete his 11th and one of the most crucial half-century. Hazlewood shared the new ball from the other end but it was Starc who provided A…

Preview - India vs Australia - Second Test.

Losing a test match after 19 tests and 560 days is not a big deal in the general run of things. What added to the criticism which India is receiving at this moment in time is the manner in which they lost. Yes, they were the favourites. Yes, they had the upper hand. But cricket does not run on presumptions. Does it?Australia outplayed India in all the departments, so much so that the unforeseen victory came within three days. But bygones should always remain bygones. The best thing about the Australian victory was that it has given a whole new perspective to the series now. At the onset of the second test in Bengaluru, India will look to do what it has done (successfully) throughout this grand home season. On the other hand, Australia will look to replicate what they did in Pune. Another loss for the hosts will ensure that they lose their first test series after almost two years. Another win for the visitors will ensure that they retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Australia have announce…
